By Joanna Jaiyeola

Every day, Air pollution has become a threat to humans.

It has over time become the cause of several respiratory diseases among people in the community.

The need to focus on prevention in our communities cannot be overemphasized.

Establishing strategies and standards for controlling and preventing pollution could save from spending millions on respiratory diseases.

control measures for reducing air pollution in the community

In this article, we will be discussing some community control strategies to reduce this problem in your home and the community at large. Example of pollution

Air pollution in the community

1. Encourage the use of cleaner vehicles and cleaner fuels

Cleaner vehicles and fuels contain lower levels of pollutants like particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.

Owners of cars should service their cars regularly to detect issues early.

When car engines are clean, the rate of pollutants is reduced.

Community leaders should encourage proper servicing of commercial and personal vehicles to reduce this problem

2. Household practices

Household practices that should be encouraged include using Energy-efficient appliances to reduce electricity consumption,

Use environmentally friendly cleaning products and avoid burning trash or yard waste.

Plant trees and maintain green spaces.

Lastly, properly dispose of hazardous materials through designated recycling programs

These household practices should be encouraged among community members in the community.

3. Establish standards for companies and industrial organizations

As a community leader, it is obvious that Gas and many other chemicals from manufacturing industries contribute to pollutants in the air. However, standards can be written out for current companies and prospective industries in the community.

They should be encouraged to follow industry-related guidelines to reduce the spread of harmful spaces in the sky.

4. Constantly make use of renewable energy

Renewable energy comes from natural elements like wind, sun, and water.

Community leaders should encourage the use of renewable energy as they generate minimal or zero emissions of pollutants.

By shifting to renewable energy sources, communities reduce their reliance on fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. Burning these fuels for energy production is a significant source of pollution, and transitioning to renewables helps break this cycle.

Some examples of renewable energy include Biogas digesters to convert organic waste into Biogas for cooking and heating, Hydropower, wind power, biomass, and many others

5. Afforestation

Afforestation is the process of planting trees and forests, and maintaining them in the community.

Having a green environment reduces the spread of pollutants in the air, because natural trees and plants absorb the chemicals and pollutants, further making room for uncontaminated air.

The painting of trees and forests is well encouraged in the community.

6. Establish systems of getting rid of garbage

Systems for gathering garbage in the community can be established, to reduce the burning of water products by community members.  A deep hole for waste can be dug to dispose of waste and burn it also, this could help reduce the number of people burning waste, and in turn reduce Air Pollution.

7. Avoid using crackers for events and festivals

Crackers during the Christmas season, festivals, and other events should be reduced or stopped as this contributes to unhealthy chemicals. When these chemicals are released into the air, people around get to inhale for a certain period, this in the long run manifests as Air pollution.

8. Direct community members toward awareness programs

Lastly, another way is organizing awareness programs in the community to make members aware of the hazards and prevention of this problem and issue, to avoid the activities that could cause it.

Steps in effecting the AIR POLLUTION control strategies

How to prevent air pollution
  • Determine the major air pollutants.
  • Establish the control measures.
  • Provide facilities and equipment to carry out these control strategies.
  • Enforce the standards among community members.
  • Create awareness in the community.
